REI BROKE THE EGG AND BEAT IT ENERGETICALLY. THEN HE added the equivalent of a little spoonful of soy sauce. Finally, he poured it all onto his rice, mixing it with his chopsticks.

Midori and her mother watched the elderly child eating his rice with raw egg. It seemed a profane liturgy unfolded before their eyes, one in which they were unable to take part.

“Does this remind you of anything?” Midori asked her mother.

“Of course it does.”

“Thank you very much,” said Rei, his tone confident, as if he had just woken from a dream.

“Has it been a long time since you had rice with raw egg?”

“Yes, a very long time. This is surely the first time since breakfast that day with my father. Excuse me for being so impolite. It was as if I could feel a cold hand at my back, a trembling hand pushing me, taking me elsewhere. And I let it . . .”

“Please, don’t worry about it, Mr. Mizusawa,” answered Ayako Yamazaki, looking at her daughter.

It was Midori’s turn to say, “I think I understand what happened to you when you relived these tastes you had known as a child, that you lost during your years in France. And, without realizing it, you also reminded me of my grandfather, during your little journey away from the present.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’ll let my mother explain, because she was reminded of her father . . . too . . . when she saw you magically reconnect with your eleven-year-old self, in Tokyo.”
